“If you hold to my teachings, then you are truly my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

– Jesus

What an amazing teaching by Jesus. Freedom is something that we all desire. We long to be set free from all that hinders us. Freedom is a basic human need…a basic human right.

Last week was Martin Luther King Jr. day. It was a day to remember and celebrate a man who had a dream…a dream of freedom. With out a doubt, Dr. King was Christ-like. Jesus’ desires…His commands…all have one thing in common — leading humanity to freedom. Freedom from being a slave to sin, hatred, anger, poverty, illness and on and on.

Think about Martin Luther King’s message. It paints an amazing picture of the truth of humanity and the need to be free. Author and Theologian NT Wright says this about Martin Luther King:

“He spoke about freedom. The was his dream. Not freedom from the world or freedom in the life after death, but freedom now. Freedom on Earth to simply be human.”

Think about it. Racial prejudice is a form of slavery. Every person, regardless of color or circumstance, is a human being created in the image of God and described by the Creator as, “very good.” When someone is treated as less than human, freedom is lost and a form of slavery is birthed. We can all learn something from the message and teachings of Martin Luther King. May we all remember to bring freedom to this world…simply by loving and treating people as what they are…human…a beautiful creation of God. After all, if we claim to love God, then we’ll love His creation and be obedient to His command to love others.
